The World's Best Coastal Hikes; Salt Life’s Top Five Recommendations

You don’t have to choose between a hike in the woods or a day at the beach. You can have the best of both worlds by enjoying a hike with a picturesque ocean backdrop. Salt Life has put together a list of hiking trails throughout the world that combine breathtaking views with crashing ocean waves. Without further ado, let’s take a hike...

Kalalau Trail on the island of Kauai, Hawaii

This 11-mile trail is not for the faint of heart, but rather those outdoor lovers looking for an epic adventure. The remote trail begins at one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and is the perfect place to watch the sunrise. Over the next 11 miles, hikers will pass cliffs, valleys, waterfalls, and beaches exclusive to the Kalalau Trail. They will also have the option to stop by some perfect locations for a picnic lunch with their hiking partner. While there isn’t really a bad time to visit the Kalalau Trail, inclement weather and trail closings are more likely to occur between December and February.

Cinque Terre, Italy
For an immersive cultural and coastal hiking experience, consider heading to Italy. In Cinque Terre, which translates to “five towns,” there is a 7.5-mile trail called The Blue Path. In September and October, summer crowds have subsided and the weather is ideal for hiking. This trail is split into four sections, connecting all five seaside villages. Overlooking the Italian Riviera, each section of the trail is unique. For example, one section, the Way of Love, has railings full of padlocks left behind by couples who wanted to lock in their love as they hiked through this breathtaking section of the path.

Lands End Coastal Trail in San Francisco, California

Along the windy shorelines of California is a 1.7-mile coastal trail featuring rocky cliffs and eye-catching wildflowers. Along the hike is access to the ocean via Mile Rock Beach, great for a quick dip or picnic lunch. One lookout point offers an artistic rock labyrinth to explore, while many others serve up picture-perfect views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Hot summers and harsh winters make March through May the best time to hike this trail.

The Lycian Way, Turkey

Stunning views of beaches and mountains are everywhere along this ancient route, which is over 310 miles long. This was Turkey’s very first long-distance walking path. These days, hikers can take a step back in time as they pass by monuments and temples from ancient empires. Locals and past visitors alike recommend April and May for hiking the Lycian Way due to the moderate temperatures.

Chimney Rock Trail near Inverness, California

In the Point Reyes Headlands, Chimney Rock Trail is known for its variety of birds, cascading spring wildflowers, and resident elephant seals. Along a narrow peninsula, this 1.75-mile path offers breathtaking views of the California coastline, especially Drakes Bay. This trail can be hiked any time of year with appropriate clothing, but the wildflowers are most impressive in the spring months of March, April, and May.

Can’t wait to get out there and hike these coastal trails? We don’t blame you! All of these scenic hikes combine the best elements of the woods and the beach.
