Must-Know Tips and Tactics for Saltwater Fishing in Florida with Astrid DeGruchy

Salt Life Team Member Astrid DeGruchy is a professional angler based in the Florida Keys. When she’s not taking advantage of living on the doorstep of the Sportfishing Capital of the World, Astrid works for a sports marketing agency. We recently sat down with Astrid to learn more about the ins and outs of saltwater fishing in Florida. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your Florida fishing trip!

Saltwater Fishing in Florida: 6 Tips for Success

Choose Your Adventure

Astrid notes that Florida’s unique geography makes it a fantastic place for anglers to learn, as they can constantly adapt and learn from the techniques used across its different bodies of water. From trolling, kite fishing, and bottom fishing on the east side to offshore deepwater fishing on the western side, there’s plenty to choose from. The Florida Keys, of course, offer the best of both worlds! So if there’s a particular type of fishing you want to try, research which part of Florida offers that type of fishing.

Know What’s In Season

Astrid points out that the seasons often change each year due to variability in currents and weather patterns. For instance, the seasons for slow-growing, slow-reproducing species such as goliath grouper are often short, meaning anglers need to be aware of what’s in season. If you’re looking to target a particular species, be sure to keep your finger on the pulse by checking local fishing forums such as the Florida Sportsman Forum or the r/FloridaFishing subreddit.

Get a Fishing License

No matter where you decide to go fishing in Florida, you’ll need a Florida fishing license. Whether you’re freshwater fishing or saltwater fishing, the State of Florida makes it easy to get the proper credentials. Find out which license you need for your fishing trip and plan accordingly. Additionally, if you’re saltwater fishing for a particular species, check whether you need a tag or permit.

Stay Up-to-Date on Local Laws and Regulations

Astrid stresses the importance of staying aware of local laws and fishery regulations before hitting the water. The rules change each year and are a vital aspect of Florida’s conservation efforts. Some species, such as tarpon and goliath grouper, are heavily protected. So when acquiring your license or permit, be sure to read closely and note any bag or size limits that apply to the species you’re targeting. If you’re fishing in the Keys, it’s critical to be aware of the boundaries of Everglades National Park, as there may be different regulations.

Learn From a Pro

Between navigating and fishing, it’s common for complications to arise that require an experienced hand. So if you’re new to Florida fishing, Astrid strongly recommends hiring a charter to learn the ropes. With their expertise, you can learn valuable new skills and tactics to help you gain experience—and that experience is paramount when it comes to protecting Florida’s delicate marine ecosystems. Inexperienced anglers risk killing fish, and it takes finesse to properly release fish. Learning how to use a dehooker, for example, is vital for ensuring a fish survives once you put them back in the water.

Talk to Locals

One of the best things about fishing in Florida is that you’re always in good company. Floridians are notoriously friendly, and Florida anglers love nothing more than talking about their latest catch. You can learn a lot from the locals, from finding out about good spots to learning about the peculiarities of the currents. And who knows? You might even find a new fishing buddy!
